October is Bully Awareness Month: The 3 Ps of Bullying Prevention

Dear Families of Miller's Martial Arts Academy,

I’d like to share a personal story with you that reminds me why Bully Awareness Month is so important. When I was a young boy, I found myself standing outside Christiancy Elementary in Michigan when a boy named Allen, who was in a grade below me, accused me of saying something about his mother. Before I could explain, I received one of the worst beatings of my life.

I still remember thinking, “Wow, that really hurts!”

Despite reaching out to my teacher, the bullying continued. Thankfully, times have changed, and schools today are much more proactive in addressing bullying. They’re working hard to tackle the root causes of teasing, exclusion, and harassment through education and awareness programs.

While schools are doing their part, as martial artists and parents, we can support these efforts with simple, practical steps. At Miller’s Martial Arts Academy, we teach the “3 Ps” of bullying prevention to help students navigate difficult situations. Here’s what we share with both students and parents:

1. Prevent

We teach our students to be aware of potential trouble and to avoid it. This means staying away from places where bullying tends to happen—whether it’s near loud, rough play or areas where known troublemakers hang out. As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

2. Prepare

Preparation is key. We encourage parents to have conversations with their children about what to do if they encounter a bully. Practice responses with them—whether it's ignoring the bully or using a strategy like humor to diffuse the situation.

In our academy, we introduce students to the concept of the "Sword of Empathy." This tool helps them respond calmly and confidently if someone is verbally aggressive. For example, if someone insults them, we teach students to reply with something like, “Let me get this straight—you think I am a ‘XXX’? Well, I disagree with you.”

We also train students to:

  • Ignore
  • Agree strategically
  • Make friends
  • Use humor
  • Stand by authority figures

Our goal is to provide our students with “live training” so they can practice these skills in real situations.

3. Protect

Protection isn’t about fighting back—it’s about using your voice. If a situation escalates, we teach students to get loud, fast. The goal is to draw attention to the situation and prevent harm. If you’d like to see what this looks like in action, we’d be happy to share a quick video demonstration with you.

Martial arts has been an incredible tool for me, and I’m proud to say that, over the years, we’ve helped many students develop the skills to prevent and manage bullying.

Let’s work together to make sure our children feel confident, safe, and empowered.

Sincerely,
Korbett Miller

Why Back-to-School Activities Matter: Why Martial Arts Should Be at the Top of Your List

As summer comes to an end, families begin preparing for a new school year. New backpacks, new teachers, and new routines all signal a fresh start. It's also the perfect time to think about after-school activities that help children thrive—not just academically, but socially, emotionally, and physically.

While sports, music, and clubs all have their place, martial arts offers a unique combination of benefits that can help children succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Building Confidence for a New School Year

The beginning of a school year can bring excitement, but it can also create anxiety. New classmates, different teachers, and unfamiliar situations can challenge even the most outgoing child.

Martial arts helps children develop genuine confidence through achievement. Every new skill learned, every stripe earned, and every belt promoted reminds students that success comes through effort and perseverance. That confidence carries into the classroom, on the playground, and in everyday life.

Improving Focus and Discipline

Teachers often notice that students who participate in structured activities demonstrate better listening skills and self-control.

Martial arts classes teach children to pay attention, follow directions, and stay focused even when distractions are present. These habits naturally transfer to school, making homework, classroom participation, and studying more productive.

A Healthy Alternative to Screen Time

After a long day at school, many children instinctively reach for a tablet, phone, or video game.

Martial arts provides an exciting alternative by getting kids moving, improving coordination, flexibility, balance, and overall fitness. Students burn energy in a positive environment while learning valuable life skills instead of spending hours in front of a screen.

Teaching Respect and Responsibility

Success in school depends on more than good grades. Character matters too.

Martial arts emphasizes respect—for instructors, parents, teachers, classmates, and oneself. Students also learn responsibility by setting goals, practicing consistently, and understanding that progress comes from dedication rather than shortcuts.

These lessons help build strong habits that benefit children throughout their lives.

Developing Resilience

Every child faces setbacks, whether it's a difficult math assignment, a challenging friendship, or learning a new skill.

Martial arts teaches that mistakes are part of learning. Students quickly discover that persistence, patience, and a positive attitude lead to improvement. Developing resilience at a young age prepares children to handle challenges with confidence instead of frustration.

More Than Just Self-Defense

While learning practical self-defense skills is certainly valuable, parents are often surprised to discover that the greatest benefits of martial arts happen off the mat.

Students develop leadership skills, improve communication, make new friends, and become part of a positive community that encourages personal growth.

Start the School Year Strong

Back-to-school season is one of the best times to establish healthy routines that support your child's success all year long. Martial arts provides structure, physical activity, confidence, discipline, and life skills that complement everything children learn in school.

At Miller's Martial Arts Academy, we've helped thousands of local students build confidence, improve focus, and develop the character needed to succeed in school and beyond. As families return to structured routines each August, it's the perfect opportunity to invest in an activity that delivers benefits far beyond exercise. Our experience has shown that back-to-school season is one of the strongest times for children to begin their martial arts journey and establish habits that last a lifetime.
If you're looking for an activity that helps your child grow stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally, we'd love to welcome your family to the academy.
